After his studies at the Gloucestershire College of Art, Sowden worked at Olivetti in the field of interior design and later in product design. In 1980, he established his own design office. For a long time, Sowden worked together with Nathalie du Pasquier. In 1990, he received the Compasso d"Oro for an electronic device of the company Olivetti. A special feature of his work was the collection "10 tappetti moderni" (1983-1986) which he designed with du Pasquier for the Italian carpet manufacturer Palmisano.
